RUBAKOV Valery Anatolievich
(February 16, 1955 - October 19, 2022)

Academician (1997), Doctor in Physics and Mathematics (1990), Professor (1997), Deputy Academician-Secretary, Head of the Nuclear Physics Section of the Physics Department of the Russian Academy of Sciences (2013-2022).

He worked at the Institute since 1975, growing from a graduate student to the chief researcher of the Department of Theoretical Physics, Academician. From 1987 to 1994 he was Deputy Director for Research.

He was known as a bright theoretical physicist in the field of quantum field theory, elementary particle physics, cosmology. He was the first to formulate the concept of monopole catalysis of proton decay in grand unification theories, proposed with co-authors a mechanism for fast electroweak non-conservation of baryon and lepton numbers at high temperatures and densities, and predicted the possibility of electroweak non-conservation of the baryon number in the decays of heavy particles.

Together with co-authors he obtained model-independent restrictions on the rate of cosmological expansion in the theory of the inflating Universe, determined the relationship between canonical quantum gravity and quantum field theory in curved space-time, formulated the theory of particle production in processes with changes in spatial topology, considered the possible experimental consequences of various options for compactification of multidimensional spaces.

He contributed a lot to the training of young scientists; for many years he was a lecturer and the head of the Department of Particle Physics and Cosmology at Moscow State University. He brought up many young scientists of the highest qualification. He was one of the active organizers of international conferences on quantum gravity, the "Quarks" seminars and the school of physicists "Particles and Cosmology".

He made a great contribution to the development of research in the most important areas of the scientific program of the Institute.

His name was included in the INR RAS Book of Honor in 2001.

Awards: Honored Professor of Moscow State University (1999), Gold Medal with Prize for Young Scientists of the USSR Academy of Sciences or RAS (1985), A.A. Fridman Prize (1999), I.Ya. Pomeranchuk Prize (ITEP) (2003), Academician M.A. Markov Prize (2005), Academician B.Pontecorvo International Prize (2009), Julius Wess Prize (2010), Lomonosov Prize (2012), N.N. Bogolyubov Prize (2014), Demidov Prize (2016), Hamburg Prize in Theoretical Physics (2020).

Honorary badge for the 30th anniversary of Troitsk (2007), the title of "Person of the Year" in the nominations "Science" and "City and Society", Troitsk (2013).
